Talking to Volkswagen CEO Stefan Jacoby

February 13, 2010

Just yesterday I had the pleasure to meet and listen to the USA CEO of Volkswagen, Stefan Jocoby. Stefan was in town to speak at a National Car Showcase at the Convention Center here in Orlando this weekend. He was nice enough to stop by my university, the University of Central Florida, and have an intimate Q&A session with about 30 people. I was lucky enough to be one of those 30 people!

I wanted to recap some of the main points Jacoby touched on during the hour I had with him. With the Toyota crisis presently in the news on a daily basis and the economy looking to recover, this was an excellent time to talk to such a prominent player in the automobile industry.

Jacoby started out by relating to how without automobiles we probably would not see many of the huge corporations and businesses we are so used to seeing; like McDonalds and Holiday Inn for example. The need for INDIVIDUAL MOBILITY is such a fundamental phenomenon here in America and is now catching on very much in places like Asia and India. Volkswagen is trying to become the dominant force, the company people associated with “car buying” here in the future.

Some key points that Jacoby touched on:

  • Jacoby said that he would love to see an International Standardized Regulation on car manufactures for things such as emissions for example. However, Jacoby knows this is just a dream but it is an important fact to remember when trying to dominate an industry internationally. You must always remember the laws here aren’t different than the laws somewhere else. And there are a ton of “somewhere else’s” in the world. According to Jacoby International inconsistency is the biggest obstacle facing VW.
  • Volkswagen is not looking to necessarily use Toyota’s recent woes as a stepping stone on their route to success. Jacoby said that VW is staying humble and looking to increase their core strength to beat out competitors, that strength being QUALITY. In a sense Stefan was actually using Toyota as an example of what can go wrong when you don’t offer the market a quality product. You can have incredible features and a dynamic product line-up but if you don’t offer quality as your core component than you are positioning yourself for failure.

When asked what engine he sees a majority of the automobiles running on in 2020 he answered quite honestly, “the same ones we run on today”. With the recent craze over the hybrid and battery operated cars this could come as somewhat of a shock to some people. Jacoby explained that Americans are really quite funny people sometimes. When gas was at $5 a gallon cars such as the Toyota Prius and the Honda Fit backlogged for months; they couldn’t produce enough cars to keep up with the demand.

Once gas went back down to $3 a gallon Americans weren’t so worried about buying these gas efficient vehicles as they were just a few months earlier. Jacoby predicted that it would take a serious and lengthy increase in gasoline prices to spike a permanent demand for more fuel efficient technologies. He made the audience consider Europe; “You don’t see gas guzzling SUV’s over in Europe do you?”. There is a reason for that, their gasoline prices are nearly 4 times that of the US and it has been  that way for a very long time. Jacoby jokingly and seriously said that gasoline prices are just “too cheap” here in the US.

His final prediction was that by 2020 5% of all vehicles sold in the US would be battery operated. “It takes a very long time too change fundamental thinking, you don’t just wake up and have the world running on battery operated vehicles.” There needs to be a major change in the infrastructure before that would happen. Where would Manhattanites charge there vehicles? I don’t see a bunch of plugs running down 5th Ave. right now, and they probably wont be for a pretty long time.

Finally, the Volkswagen CEO mentioned that VW is really trying to just get into the mind of consumers when they think about buying an automobile. “Branding is essential” said Jacoby as he mentioned VW’s recent Punch Dub campaign.

Taking A Tumble

Market Forecast:

The market is in for a steep correction to the downside. With Obama’s recent comments bank stocks are in for a quick decline, China stocks will level off with frozen lending, and the market is amid a “sell off”. Look for another bad week next week in the market (possibly another 3-5% decline). Short the banks & short the Euro. USD could possibly take a hit as well. Lets see what happens…

Importance of following through…

December 16, 2009

Don’t Be A Pansy. Stay Motivated!

As I finish reading the book Think Like a Champion by Donald Trump there is a story he shared that really struck a chord with me.  Looking around me businesses are shutting down, the youth of America is reconcentratting on the goals of getting a steady job and working their way up the corporate ladder. This vision is shared with their parents and grandparents generations, fueled by the Great Depression. The spirit of entrepreneurs seems to be a little tattered and some of those entrepreneurs are giving up on their dreams.

However, there is a story that every person, young or old, should think of when debating whether to give up on their entrepreneurial dreams. It goes a little something like this…

Being stubborn is a big part of being a winner. [...] My father used to tell us this story about a guy who loved soda, so he went into the soda business, with a product he called 3UP. It failed. So he started again with a product called 4UP. It failed, too. So he decided to name his product 5UP and worked just as hard to make it work, but sure enough, it failed again. He realized that he still loved soda, so he tried again with a product named 6UP. It failed, and he gave up completely. Then, a few years later, someone else came up with a soda product and named it 7UP, which became a huge success.

Moral of the story: If you have passion combined with an unrelenting dedication to making your brand, your product, yourself a winner then don’t ever give up. Follow through with your dreams. You don’t want to be the guy or girl who created 6Up. Be the guy or girl who kept trying until you attained your proverbial 7UP.

Fellow College Students: Start A Revolution!

December 2, 2009

My concerns about current college students and their lack of “drive”. Have a revelation and start a revolution!!

My Approach To The Credit Crunch

December 2, 2009

Just yesterday I launched my new project that Ive been working on for the past few weeks. My idea is 2 fold.

1. Help various charities somewhere in the world. I have always had a passion for giving back.

2. Help myself at the same time. With the restrictions on student loans these days it has become much tougher for me as a college student to keep chugging along with my current financial situation.

My Idea: Create a unique website to allow individuals all over the world to donate $1 in an attempt to collect at least $1,000,000. Just one dollar at a time. By limiting donations to just $1 I am hoping it will entice individuals that potentially have never engaged in acts of charity to start. People will detail which city they live when they donate. By doing so they are basically tallying 1 vote for their city. Once the 1,000,000 mark is reached a city will win the title of “The Most Philanthrepic City In The World”

Where the money goes: Once $1,000,000 is collected I will donate 50% to various charities in the city that wins the title. The other 50% will go to myself to help pay for college tuition as well as allow me to start my own business after college. Starting my own business has always been a deffinite goal of mine.

Tell your friends and family! Help your city win the title of “The Most Philanthrepic City In The World”.

Quick Thought on Momentum…

November 28, 2009

Momentum: strength or force gained by motion or through the development of events. (Defined by Webster’s Dictionary)

Momentum… Have you ever thought about how momentum affects people and more specifically business? This thought crossed my mind on the long drive I encountered today. I had time to reflect on my thoughts and actions as of late. Achievements are nothing without building upon those achievements, to create a forward momentum.

I can create a website. I can study hard to ace an exam. I can start new organizations to help people in today’s often unclear times. But what really am I doing if I do not build upon each of those to create something better than that which came before it? My life would be a collage of random achievements with no synthesis or cohesion.

“Through the development of events”. These words of the definition cannot be underestimated or forgotten. If Einstein just thought of the idea for the light bulb and nothing further, he would have been an average guy with some brilliant thoughts. Everyone can have brilliant thoughts though. What made Einstein great however, was his uncanny ability to build upon his thoughts and create even better ideas. Every achievement was the foundation for his next.

Momentum is important in business and in life. Ask yourself how you can best yourself; how can you best your latest “achievement”? By always asking yourself that question you will be opening your mind to new dimensions, not stagnating in the present, but always looking to the future. Building momentum. Relish your achievements, but realize that your present achievement should only be a small step to accomplishing bigger and loftier achievements.

Realize that you cannot take 5 steps forward and just sit there thinking you have hit a plateau and expect things to continue moving forward. I’m sorry but it doesn’t work that way! You must practice maintaining your momentum, never settling for what you think is your best. If you are always creating momentum through your successes and even failures , your momentum will never have an end. It will always be gaining force and becoming stronger.

Barack Obama relished in his senatorial victory, but realized this will not be his highest achievement.  No, Obama used his achievement of becoming senator to propel himself into a greater role. He was creating momentum. Obama overcame enormous odds and I guarantee he is not done achieving; his momentum will bring him to even greater heights.

When you hit difficult waters don’t let your mind convince you to slow down. Keep your momentum or you will be at the mercy of the powerful seas. Stay focused and never lose your momentum. Keep moving forward.

Review of “Crush It” by Gary Vanyerchuck

November 26, 2009

Review of “Crush It” by Gary Vaynerchuk

If books were titled so that you didn’t have to sift through the first 20 pages of bs to find out what the heck the book is about, Crush It would be named: How social media can be used to your advantage

After a few casual conversations with an entrepreneurial friend of mine the name Gary Vaynfodfkjjdkjlskjd kept coming up as someone I should know. I’ve never heard of this guy in my life. I’m a pretty “with-it” guy. I listen to the news, pay attention to current events, and even read newspaper (soon to be thought of as an ancient form of publication).

So after about the 5th time of hearing about “how could you not know who Gary Vandokifodfi is.?.?.?” I googled this guy. Not much came up but a rather plain and boring website showing some middle school aged students all reading this book by GARY VAYNERCHUK. Almost an Oprah-esqe picture with all her good deeds.  Ahhhhhh how appropriate his book was for sale right next to this picture. CRUSH IT by GARY VAYNERCHUK. I jotted the name down on a piece of paper.

Drive over to B&N (Barnes and Noble) and pick up the book to read over the Thanksgiving break as I am harassed by my girlfriend Amanda saying “you’re never going to find time to read that over break”. Sooo honest baby thats why I love you.

Well I’ll just say I proved her wrong. Love ya babe. The book was completely read in a matter of 2 days. Rather nights, that’s when I get my down time to read.

So my thoughts on the book…

Very easy, light read at 140ish pages.

The foundation of the book hinges on the impression that the reader 1) is some-what new to the idea of social media 2) you are a go-getter who has roughly 10-15 hours a week to devote to building your “personal brand” (the idea of personal branding is mentioned quickly in the book, if you’re looking for a book specifically describing personal branding this book isn’t for you)

However, Crush It does give you the websites and good ideas to begin your personal branding journey.

I personally was never on the twitter bandwagon until I read this book. In my quest to become a household name or even become a name it seemed that I would have to pony up on just about every social networking site imaginable after reading this book. Gary gives you the websites and steps to reaching super geek status with your friends ( joining everything from twitter to blogging about your passion). But with Gary’s straight-up “G” no bs way of communicating he really reached me on a personal level and told me I need to be doing these things in this day and age to be what I want. BIG.

I am now on twitter (( self promo… twitter.com/themarleyhughes )). I am now a geek.

As you can see I am have now reached super geek status in a matter of days. I am now… ((push my coke bottle glasses up nerdishly))…. I am now a blogger.

Vaynerchuk ties in a little of his short history into the book which gives it the credibility you expect if you’re going to waste your time reading basically a self-help book.

Overall the book made me join twitter ( something I was almost passionately against almost a month ago ), and I am now a blogger. Read the book if you want to know the exact reasons why you should jump on the social media wave.

Definitely recommend if you’re looking to make it BIG like myself, or if you’re a business owner. Social media is changing the landscape of business. Get ahead now, before you’re exponentially behind.

My totally meaningless score:

8.65 /10

Basis For This Blog

November 20, 2009

The Basis For My Blog–

As a way to make my name and passions ingrained into the minds of people all over the world I have started this blog.

My initial thoughts are that I will showcase 1 company a week who is currently selling in the stock market for less than $3 a share ( in my mind “Small-Cap“). I will vigorously research these companies and publish an in-depth “review” of them. Making money hand-over-fist in the stock market is my passion, and I hope to bring that same enthusiasm to others.

This will be a new venture for myself as I have never done this in a public format.I look forward to the learning experience and the opportunity to make a name for myself.

I also plan on incorporating relevant news in the investment industry. Anything from company mergers to Jim Cramers stock picks can and will be fair game.

Overall I hope to gain a following of support resulting from my dedication and enthusiasm in my small-cap reviews. I will try to make this a tasteful blog rich with information as well as enticing ( not bland and boring).

Thanks for the support,

-Marley
